The following must be a relief to the people of Foston:
That on the 28th of November 1399 a Mandate to all sheriffs and others to allow the men and tenants of the honour of Richmond of Bennington and Foston to be quit of toll, stallage, chiminage, pontage, pavage, picage, murage and passage for their goods and merchandise within the realm, according to custom. [CPR 1399-1401, 128]
Sourced from the British History websiteStallage is the rent paid for a stall in a fair or market.
chiminage: A toll for passage through a forest.
pontage: is a duty or tax paid for repairing bridges.
pavage: a tax toward paving streets.
piccage: Money paid at fairs for leave to break ground for booths.
murage: a toll or tax for the repair or construction of the walls or fortifications of a town.
Sourced from the Dictionary reference website...but does it mean we can get some discount on the poll tax?
St Peters church: circa 1910 from a postcard, kindly lent to us by Stephen Burroughs. Does any one know who the gentleman might be? (and no it is not your webmaster but please let me know)
